Alinta is a G5P2, 27-year-old Aboriginal woman who is due to birth her third chi

Alinta is a G5P2, 27-year-old Aboriginal woman who is due to birth her third child. She has Gestational Diabetes (diagnosed at 28 weeks) and has been in the hospital for 2 weeks due to unstable blood glucose levels.
Alinta has indicated that she wants to return to her remote community briefly, as she is very homesick (and her health beliefs suggest homesickness will add to her health problems). Whilst she currently lives in metropolitan Adelaide the rest of her family live in the APY lands in northern South Australia.
There is a car from her community here right now and she is packing her bag!
Questions for discussion in your critical reflection:
What do you see as the major ethical dilemmas in this scenario?
What PHC principles may be useful to your solution?
How do you provide a culturally safe communication approach to the situation?
How can this scenario be managed in a culturally safe way?

It will be useful to consider the following when answering the above questions:
– Population health with regards to Indigenous health and culture
– Cultural awareness and cultural safety
– Policies past and present
– Implications for midwifery practice/MSP & codes
– Models of care
