Post a brief explanation of three important components of the psychiatric interview and why you consider these elements important.
The psychiatric interview is essential in evaluating and establishing a diagnosis and treatment plan. Three important components of the psychiatric interview include obtaining a psychiatric history, building a therapeutic relationship, and a drug and alcohol assessment (Carlat, 2017). Establishing a therapeutic relationship lays the foundation for an effective treatment as this builds trust between the clinician and the client, allowing the client to express themselves and be less judgmental. This will also allow ease in obtaining information for a psychiatric history, Psychiatric disorders have histories that are unique to specific conditions; hence, obtaining a detailed psychiatric history is essential to get the correct diagnosis (Boland et al., 2022). Obtaining a detailed drug and alcohol assessment in a nonjudgmental way is essential in creating an effective treatment plan for the client.
Explain the psychometric properties of a rating scale.
Psychiatric clinicians require psychometric properties like that of a Mental Status Examination (MSE) to assess, evaluate, and diagnose a patient to create an effective treatment plan. Practitioners create the MSE with a similar focus in each main area but can be rearranged (Voss & Das, 2022). The MSE assesses the following in a patient: appearance, speech, behavior, motor activity, mood, judgment, thought processes, affect, thought process, Flight of ideas, thought content, insight, orientation, cognition, memory, attention/concentration perceptions, and judgment (Voss & Das, 2022).
Explain when it is appropriate to use this rating scale with clients during the psychiatric interview and how the scale is helpful to a nurse practitioner’s psychiatric assessment.
The psychiatric Nurse practitioner uses various interactive interview tools for assessment based on the current situation. The mental status examination is the physical examination used by a psychiatrist (Voss & Das, 2022). It is standardized for psychiatric practice in evaluating the mental status of the patient. The current mental status of the patient is determined based on combined information collected by the clinician from passive observation throughout the interview and data collected by questioning the patient (Voss & Das, 2022). This exam is unique to identifying, diagnosing, and monitoring signs and symptoms of mental conditions (Voss & Das, 2022). The nurse practitioner uses Parts of the mental status examination to assess various regions of the patient’s mental ability to identify the subjective and objective areas of mental conditions used by the nurse practitioner in diagnosing the patient (Voss & Das, 2022).
