ENG 781
Length: 7-10 pages

For the second half of this course we’ve been studying the works of postmodern poets and the critical narratives that define or describe postmodernism. The consensus (if there is one) is that postmodern writers reacted to the radical changes throughout the later part of the 20th century by creating works that emphasize a radical break with modernist poetics, immersion in the moment, an embrace of uncertainty or radical fluidity, the use of personal history as aesthetic material, contingent resolution to existential crises, and lack of resolution as an end in itself. We’ve spent several weeks reading postmodern poetry. So: does this narrative fit? ? For this essay, pick a particular poet from the second half of the course (the postmodern half) and use direct citation and quotation to answer this question: Does this critical narrative of postmodernism accommodate this particular poet and why/why not?
