First, familiarize yourself with the Gabriel’s Conspiracy and Nat Turner’s Rebel

First, familiarize yourself with the Gabriel’s Conspiracy and Nat Turner’s Rebellion sections of the Library of Virginia exhibition (including the brief summary of both events). Next, find four primary sources (found in the “Documents” section of the website) from one of these rebellions. Then, using the “Trial of Gabriel” reading, if you are looking at Gabriel’s Conspiracy, or The Confessions of Nat Turner, if you are looking at Nat Turner, you will answer this prompt.
Using the accounts and documents from this rebellion, what do these texts tell us about the motivations for enslaved people to revolt, and what was the response to these revolts from within the white community? You should try to connect these motivations and reactions to the readings from the Haitian Revolution this week to provide some global context.
Create a typed response between 300 and 400 words that answers this prompt fully. Include the word count on the last line of your paper. You must make use of at least four primary sources related to your selected rebellion, found in the “Documents” section of the “Death or Liberty” website. Be sure to use specific examples and quotes from the readings, and feel free to extend your research to other academic resources you find.
If you do not include specific examples or do not reach the word limit, you will not receive full points on the assignment. Please do not repeat the question, but instead, incorporate it into your answer. Avoid being overly vague with your examples and be sure, again, to make use of the readings. For quotations, note the page number and author (when available).
You will be submitting your paper through Blackboard through the assignment link. You must upload your paper to this link before the start of the class on Thursday. I will grade your papers through the link, and you should be able to see my comments within a few days of submission.
Bring your response with you to class (digitally or physically), and you will use it for our discussion.
