Lab reports are written as a way to analyze and understand data that explain scientific phenomenon. Doing hands-on experiments help the experimenter understand the world around them. In this class you will perform at least 2 experiments and write them up.
In the second experiment you will spend time understanding how digestive enzymes help us get nutrients from the food that we eat. While digestion is very complex, the major site of digestion in the body is the small intestine. It’s not the stomach! Most digestion happens in the beginning inches of the small intestine and the rest of the long narrow tube is spent absorbing nutrients. Food (chyme) passes from the stomach to the small intestine then it mixes with a myriad of digestive juices. In this experiment you will be using common items found in your own home to mimic these digestive enzymes!
There are 3 macromolecules that the body can absorb, in this experiment you will focus on fat (lipids). The gall bladder secretes a liquid called bile. This substance acts like a detergent (soap) to dissociate larger fats into smaller droplets that are easier to be absorbed in your small intestine.
