Liberal Studies is designed to develop your critical thinking skills. In this assignment, you will practice this skill by completing a summary and analysis of an article you read in Module 1.
For this assignment you need to read Allen Repko’s article “Fable of the Elephant House”.
This is an informal writing assignment, so it is acceptable to present your findings in note form.
The instructions below require the completion of several steps, but you only need to submit your thesis statement, summary and analysis:

Instructions
First, determine the thesis of the article. That is, what is the author trying to prove/argue?
Review the article again and underline key points in the essay. Use a dictionary to look up any words you do not know. Mark up any statements that you find confusing. Write a list of the main points.
Provide a summary of the article, either in bullet form or paragraph form. You may find it helpful to use your main points (located above) to help you shape your summary.
Now you will critically analyze the article (that is you will analyze and evaluate).
To analyze, you isolate each of the key arguments/important points/ ideas in the article (analysis mean literally “to break apart”). Use your list of main points to help you identify the key arguments.
To evaluate you should determine the efficacy of the article based on how effective the arguments/key elements are and the degree to which they support the thesis. You can write your evaluation in paragraph or bullet form.
