The interest group model of regulation is an essential component of the healthcare sector. The interest group prototype indicates that the government or regulatory companies do not merely determine directives but are a product of discussing terms and negotiation between divergent interest groups. The interest group model of regulation views directives as efforts to further the interests of affected groups, usually producer groups (Lee, 2019). The interest group model of regulation asserts that legislatures are like markets in that individuals and groups seek regulations to further their interests (Lee, 2019). Some organizations within the healthcare sector seek to pass legislation or put it into place that further develops their agenda or benefits their company in some form.

In the interest group model, it is presumed that the public is made of many political entities advocating for various partners, such as businesses and professional coalitions. These interest groups actively work to advance and safeguard their gains through persuading advocacy and other strategies of governmental involvement. Interest groups compete to influence officials and politicians who decide on regulatory policies to maximize their respective interests (Lee & Seo, 2022). Interest groups within the healthcare sector may advertise their services and beliefs to elected officials, hoping that the politician follows their mission. If the interest groups sway enough politicians, the elected officials will likely vote for legislation that benefits these specific interest groups. Interest groups have impacted American politics for a significant amount of time.

There are some Critics of the interest group model. These attackers assert that it may overline the governing procedures by failing to observe additional elements such as the responsibility of experts, governmental companies, and community sentiment. Furthermore, some claim the interest group model may cause regulatory apprehension, where influential interest groups utilize overindulgent authority and control over governing resolutions, likely at the cost of inclusive general interest. Regardless of some negative feedback, the interest group model gives a functional structure for comprehending the challenging dynamics included in governing decision-making and focuses on the significance of pluralism and various interest presentations in a democratic type of administration. Governments routinely decide to involve special interests in the development of public policy, a practice that can misrepresent policy outcomes away from the public interest (Hubert et al., 2023). Regardless of the government’s involvement with public policy, healthcare administrators must follow the law and lead with ethical example. Individuals who receive healthcare services deserve to be provided with the highest quality healthcare, regardless of any political agenda. It is undeniable that interest groups will influence healthcare policymakers. This influence will impact the rules and regulations passed and enforced in the healthcare sector.

There is a Biblical connection to the interest group model of regulation. “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established; the authorities that exist have been established by God (Romans 13:1).” Current and future healthcare administrators must understand the importance of comprehending and applying regulations to the organizations they lead. God requires there to be regulations within companies and the world. However, God requires us to follow the procedures He has determined are good instructions. Many studies and directives will be provided in the healthcare setting. As current and future healthcare administrators, we must determine what information is worthy of application to our practice and what guidance is not valuable to the healthcare industry. For healthcare leaders to grow, they will need to know how to sort through information and determine how specific policies or advisements can improve the operations of the healthcare organizations they lead. God requires His children to keep Him first in all they do.
