PROVIDE A DISCUSSION RESPONSE TO THE POST BELOW:
The theory that best explains violent criminal behavior is the rational choice theory. This theory portrays that criminals are rational actors who weigh out the cost of their actions before deciding to commit a crime and assumed people want to maximize pleasure and minimize pain. (Cornish and Clarke 1986) Research shows that most criminals can accurately assess the risks and rewards of their actions and make decisions accordingly. Those who are more rational and able to weigh the costs and benefits of their actions are more likely to engage in violence when it is deemed beneficial to them.
The theory that best explains non-violent criminal behavior is the social learning theory. This theory states that people learn from observing the behavior of others and the consequences of that behavior. People are more likely to engage in criminal behavior if they observe others around them doing it and not experiencing any negative consequences. Additionally, people are more likely to engage in criminal behavior if they have a positive reinforcement for doing so, such as praise from others or receiving money.
