Select one of the scenarios below and write a one-page memo discussing how you would handle a difficult issue as professional. In your memo, you will need to address the following:
1) What would be your approach to connecting with the other person involved? (When and how–Face-to-face, in writing, what mode of communication, etc.) Briefly discuss why this is the approach you would take.
2) What would you say—whether F2F or in writing? Be specific.
3) Reflect on the outcome you would like to achieve with the actions you have taken. Also, reflect on what your Plan B would be if you don’t attain the outcome you would like.
Select one of these scenarios:
#1 You’ve graduated and are working in your new career. You have received your annual evaluation and you do not think it is fair. You’ve worked hard this year and think you do as well as anyone else in your unit. Your boss sat down with you and asked if you had any questions, but at the time, you did not have time to read the entire evaluation carefully. Now that you have read the evaluation, maybe your boss just doesn’t like you. You start to think you should look for a new job, maybe at some place that appreciates you.
#2 It is two weeks before finals and you are checking your grades at 2 am. You found out your team did not earn the needed points to pass a major project in a course that is required for your degree. Your team struggled in working together on the project, but you feel you did your part. You are a senior and expected to graduate this term with your folks planning to be at graduation. So what do you do?
#3 Develop your own scenario with something you have faced in work or in school and write a memo about your experience. In this case you would need to present your situation and describe what you did and the outcome. As the 3rd part of your memo, reflect on your actions and what you would do to improve should you face a similar situation in the future.
