Students are tasked with locating two peer-reviewed journal articles: one that utilizes quantitative data to address a criminological or criminal justice research question, and one that utilizes qualitative data to do the same. Read the articles, paying special attention to how the data was collected and analyzed, as well as the authors’ rationalizations for choosing to use that type of data. Students must then write a brief summary of each article. Lastly, students must reflect on how quantitative and qualitative data may be better suited to answer certain types of research questions in our field. Provide theoretical examples of when you might use each type of method and explain why.
Submissions must be between 900 and 1200 words, with each article summary and the reflection section containing 300 to 400 words each. Please refer to the syllabus for formatting guidelines and course policies relevant to submitting written work.
