Essay Question: Perpetua’s Journey
In Perpetua’s Journey, we read one account of a Christian woman’s imprisonment and execution in the Roman Empire. This book recreates her story in comic book form. Considering everything that you read, answer the following two questions:
1) What do we know about Perpetua and what does her perspective tell us about specific events in the ancient world?
2) As historians we always need to think about what a source doesn’t tell us. Tell me what we do not know about her and what other sources we might want to seek to fill in some of these gaps.
To answer both questions, you will need to tell me what you know about Perpetua (using citations from the book), and you will need to refer to where the diary leaves unanswered questions for you, the reader. When citing your evidence, you can either refer to the diary itself (in the final portion of the book), or to the graphic novel version of it (in the first section of the book). Either is perfectly fine.
