#1 Discussion 2: Developmental Theory
Mrs. Wright has brought her 8-month-old, Brooks, to the hospital ER for not eating. Brooks was diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus at 4 months of age. Brooks is small for her age and whimpers anytime you approach her. She is not interested in toys that are shiny and withdrawals into her mother’s arms when a toy is offered. Is she having difficulty developing trust? If so, what interventions can the CCLS implement to promote achievement of this developmental stage?

Answering Questions
Review pages 8-10 (pages 29-31 if you have the digital copy of the text) and select one of the questions commonly asked by children. Share with us the question, and a child-friendly (Child Life) response to that question. Be careful to create a script guideline that offers open ended questions for the child, and to give only the information being asked for by the question. This may change based on the child but when open ended questions are used, the child’s responses will guide our responses & additional open ended questions.
Second, reflect on how easy or difficult answering the question was for you. With open ended questions, does answering the child’s question make it easier or more challenging to separate your own feelings from those the child may be experiencing?
Book chapter is attached. Scroll down until you see pages 8-10 to find the questions.
