Running head: ABBREVIATED TITLE GOES HERE 1
Title of Your Paper Goes Here
Your Name
Polk State College
ABBREVIATED TITLE GOES HERE 2
Title of Paper Goes Here
This is where you begin to type your introduction. It should be a concise general
introduction to the paper and the problem or topic to be addressed. It should start with some
general information to introduce the concept(s) covered in the paper. It should then give more
specific information to the reader on what can be expected in the paper. The introduction is
placed directly under the title and does not require a heading. Its placement in the paper
identifies it as the introduction.
Definition
In this section you will provide the definition of the specific disease or disorder you have
chosen and been approved to research. This should not simply be a one sentence quote.
Etiology
In this section you will discuss the etiology of the specific disease or disorder you have
chosen. Etiology refers to the cause of a certain disease. It is the study of disease causation or
origination. When the etiology of a disease is unknown, it is said to be idiopathic. Diseases
could be described as genetic (the individual’s genes are responsible for the defect), congenital
(factors in the embryo’s intrauterine environment interfere with normal development) or
acquired (other factors encountered later in life produce the disease). What factors lead to this
disease……smoking, environment, an extra chromosome?
Pathophysiology
In this section you will discuss the pathophysiology of the specific disease or disorder
you have chosen. Pathophysiology focuses on the abnormal functioning of diseased organs with
application to medical procedures and patient care. It studies the changes of normal mechanical,
physical and biochemical functions which are either caused by a disease or from an abnormal

syndrome. When we discuss pathophysiology, it’s not just about the clinical manifestations. It is
literally the physiology of altered or abnormal states. It includes the structural and functional
changes that occur in the body as a result of the disease or condition. So when we talk about this,
it’s not just the changes at the cellular, tissue, and organ level of the body but also the effects of
these changes in the body overall.
Incidence, Mortality, and Morbidity Rates
In this section you will discuss the incidence, mortality, and morbidity rates for the
specific disease or disorder you have chosen. When you investigate these items, look at if they
are improving. This would demonstrate better management or understanding of the condition.
Don’t just list numbers.
Clinical Manifestations
In this section you will discuss the clinical manifestations of the specific disease or
disorder (that is not genetic) you have been assigned. This should not just be a listing of
manifestations. When you address one, discuss why this is seen or how it might come about in
the process of the condition. Is it the first manifestation that will occur? Does it cause or is it a
result of another manifestation? These are the types of things to think about and address. This
should demonstrate understanding and critical thinking, not just listing.
Diagnostics
In this section you will discuss the diagnostics that are appropriate for the specific disease
or disorder you have chosen. Why are these done and what will they show or what are they
looking for? This is how you demonstrate understanding and clinical judgment.
Treatments
Pharmacological Management
ABBREVIATED TITLE GOES HERE 4
In this section you will discuss the pharmacological treatments for the specific disease or
disorder you have chosen. How do they help? Remember pharmacological can be prescription or
nonprescription therapies. What doses are common? How do these medications help the
condition?
Non-pharmacological Management
In this section you will address the nonpharmacologic treatments that are utilized for the
specific disease or disorder you have chosen. In some conditions it may be nutritional treatments.
Other conditions may utilize physical therapy or occupational therapy as a mainstay of treatment.
Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines
Here you will discuss what the evidence says regarding treatment for the specific disease
or disorder you have chosen. What does current literature say about this? Are there trails
showing promise?
Application to Practice
In this section you will address the implications and application to practice for the
specific disease or disorder you have chosen. What does a paramedic need to consider and do for
a patient with this disease or disorder? How do you take what you have learned and apply it to a
real patient in a real care setting? This is what you need to think about. We know vital signs are
important for everyone, but you need to discuss in depth beyond those.
