THIS WEEK’S READING WAS 5.1-5.12 OF THE BOOK ATTACHED. PROVIDE A DISCUSSION RESPONSE TO THE POST BELOW:
Ok to my understanding and please correct me if I’m wrong but the theories I read about didn’t really explain why someone does or commits violent criminal behavior or non-violent criminal behavior. According to this week’s reading a theory is “an explanation to make sense of our observation about the world.” Our theory must explain the facts and we must also create those theories that test their hypothesis.
Pre-Classical Theory was based on the spiritual explanations so depending on one’s religion if you committed a sin then it was as equal to breaking the law.
Classical School according to “Classroom,” criminals induces crime for the sake of pleasure and pain. This was used to create a standard belief for the benefit of society, which criminals exhibit impulsive behavior that leads to liability in society.
Neoclassical Theory came from the late 1800s and neoclassical thinkers focused on the nature of the crime.
Using some of those theories in this week’s reading I believe violent and non-violent criminal behavior comes how people are in general. Using the modern deterrence theory it basically “tries to changes a person’s behavior through laws and punishment.” As we have seen over the different ages and changes of theory people will do what they want depends on sociologic belief. I think the Rationale Active Theory that Cornish and Clarke proposed is a great explain of why criminals create crime.
When it comes to behaviors associated to theories that best explain violent and non-violent behavior I believe its more of a psychological perspective. I believe those that commit crime suffer from some sort of mental illness that is either social, biological, psychological. I hate to give excuses because I don’t think there is ever a good explanation as to why someone commits a crime but crime has been happening since the days of the ice ages.
Of those three I believe psychological theory would best explain why a criminal commits a crime. No one is born a criminal but as they grow they tend to learn what is right and what is wrong. Any criminal behavior even if it’s non-violent is still a crime, and I believe it’s the psychological environment that affects the outcome of an individual. According to Britannica, “children internalize the love and attachment of their parents. If a child see’s his parents commit a crime they will tend to think its ok and later commit the same if not more serious of crimes.
